Self-Protection

Many people have protective strategies that they tend to use so they don’t feel too uncomfortable. Sometimes these mechanisms are automatic and sometimes they are deliberate. Protective strategies were often quite adaptive and very helpful at the stage of life in which they are developed. Sometimes they can stick around longer than necessary or not be modified to suit current life stage or circumstances and therefore be less useful than they once were.
